For long, dreary days, everyone prayed in the musty parsonage to God for guidance. But nothing seemed to help. Hannah felt weak from days of fasting, baby Timothy got no better, and the girls continued to have frightening fits that came and went.

“Hannah!”

She was peeling turnips and jumped at the sound of Mercy’s voice.

“Let’s go,” Mercy called. “Ann and I want to talk to Abigail. It’s important. We think you’d better come.”

Reluctantly, Hannah set out alongside them.

On the road, the sun warmed Hannah’s back and the fields bloomed with tiny white and yellow flowers. She even spied bluebells at the foot of a large tree. But they did nothing to banish her dark fears.

Mercy and Ann seemed oblivious, for they skipped ahead, laughing.

Half a mile from the parsonage, Abigail appeared, her fair hair backlit by the golden sun. Lizzie and a few other girls were with her.

“I’m glad you’ve come.” Abigail spoke in a strange, singsong voice.

Something felt off about the way she talked. The sun no longer felt warm and the cool breeze had teeth. Hannah shivered.

Abigail led the way through the field, parting the flowers and long grass, and sat beneath a tall Beech tree.

Hannah followed, but every part of her wanted to turn and run away.

When they were arranged in a circle, Abigail spoke.

“I have some terrible news,” she said. But her words contrasted strangely with the smile she wore. “I saw from the parsonage window a most dreadful sight.”

Ann leaned forward, breathless. “What did you see?”
